Places To Buy Ferret Food

Ferrets have a highly specialized diet and you may not be able to find it in your local grocery store, so where are good places to buy ferret food?

Firstly you should try your nearest pet store.  If they sell ferrets then they will also sell ferret food.  This is particularly good if you are going to the store you bought your ferret from and intend keeping him on the same diet.  It also gives you a chance to ask the assistants any questions you may have about your furry friend and see if they can give you advice, as well as allowing you to pick up any ferret specific toys or treats you may need.

If you bought from a breeder or there is no pet store near you stocking ferret food you can look online.  Bear in mind though that although the cost of the food may be slightly cheaper you may have to pay a delivery charge and wait a few days before it is delivered so if you are buying this way it’s best not to do it at the last minute.  However one advantage is that you can shop around to find a product and price that best suits you.  But don’t always go for the cheapest option.  Ferrets can be incredibly fussy eaters and will not appreciate you chopping and changing food.  This is particularly so with older ferrets who will have very firm ideas on what they do and don’t like to eat.

If you have completely run out and need food urgently then you can give them a very high quality cat food but this should only be done in an absolute emergency.  Most cat foods don’t contain the essentials that your ferret needs so you need to look for a product that contains at least 35-40% animal protein, 18% animal fat, less than 7% ash and less than 3% fiber.  You should also give them a drop of Ferretone with this.  Ferretone is a food supplement which contains amino acids and vitamins which will help to keep your ferret’s coat and skin healthy.

Under no circumstances must you ever give your ferret dog food.  It contains no nutritional value to them whatsoever.

Don’t feed them on leftovers from your meal.  Most human foods contain too much salt and other additives for them.  On top of this their short digestive systems cannot cope with fruit and vegetables or dairy products.

If you want to supplement your ferret’s diet with fresh meat then give them a small amount of cooked chicken, try to include chicken heart and liver in this if you can.  This has nutritional value that the muscle tissue cannot provide.  Alternatively you can give them some raw chicken breast which has been frozen and fully thawed.  However do not give them this as their sole diet.

Choosing a Ferret Diet: is a Natural Diet Right for Your Ferret?

Until the last 40 years, ferrets were fed what we refer to as a “natural diet,” which was similar to the diet of the domestic ferret’s wild ancestors. In recent years as ferrets have become more popular, they have been fed commercially prepared ferret, cat, and kitten diets. While this is convenient for us as owners, is it what our ferrets were meant to eat? What exactly is a natural diet, and what are the benefits and concerns associated with it?
