What’s the best way to train a ferret to walk on a leash?

Mine acts as though a leash is some sort of torture device, yet he’s dying to go outside.
He doesn’t like treats either! ha Maybe I just have an unusual ferret. He sure is a sweetheart though.

  1. ask your vet or walk him until he gets used to it

  2. I guess just…
put him on it and go!

  3. every time you put him on a leash give him a treat
practice that for a few minutes

  4. good question if its young enough just put the leash on and start to walk if it doesnt walk go back to where the ferret is and try again till it starts to follow and when it stops then just try it again

AWW i thought most ferrets liked to walk on a leash, at least mine did. Have u tried making him follow a treat while on the leash and then rewarding him after walking a short distance, and then gradually longer and longer distances, always giving him a treat after for a job well done, pretty soon he will know that if he walks on his leash that he his getting a reward and some playtime with his loving owner!

Some like them, others don’t – mine, for the most part, don’t! When I put the harness and leash on my one ferret, he just drops and lays on the floor like he’s saying, ‘I surrender!’ However, the second I take him outside, he completely forgets about the leash. Here’s a few things that I’ve read that might help – Put the harness (and only the harness) on your ferret a little bit each day. Leave it on longer and longer each day, until he seems to not even notice it anymore. Once he’s at that point, attach the leash to the harness and let him walk around dragging the leash behind him. This will help him get used to the feeling of the leash (just be careful that he doesn’t get stuck, same goes for when he has just the harness on). The next step is to hold on to the leash and walk with him. Keep in mind, they aren’t leash-trainable like dogs, meaning they won’t go the way you always want them to go. They want to go where they want to go! =) Good luck!
