Buying A Ferret

Baby ferrets, which are known as kits, can be bought from a breeder, a pet store or adopted from an animal shelter. An adult male ferret is called a hob and an adult female ferret is referred to as a jill.

Adopting A Ferret

When baby ferrets are ready for adoption they will have already been weaned and be on solid food. Even still, their teeth won’t yet be sharp enough to chew any hard food. You’ll want to soak their food in warm water for approximately 5 to 10 minutes to make it easier for them to eat.

The best type of food to give them would be the kind that is specially formulated for ferrets – and specifically for baby ferrets. Some people will opt to feed their ferret cat food. If you do this, make sure it’s a premium quality food and check the protein and fat levels very carefully. You want to make sure that you’re getting the proper amounts of protein and fat that your ferret requires.

Ferret Diet

Be aware that your kit needs more fat and protein than a kitten does. Ferrets have a rapid gastrointestinal transit time of about 3 to 4 hours. This means that they need high-quality, easily digestible protein sources. Make sure that any food you give to your baby ferret contains 35-40% protein and 20% fat.

Your kit needs a good balance of meat and poultry products to be able to avoid any risk of urinary tract or intestinal blockages. On top of this, your ferret needs to have water available, either in a dish or bottle, at all times.

What About Ferret Snacks?

Strictly speaking, ferrets just don’t need snacks. However, you can offer very small portions of bananas, crackers and raisins. These kind of snacks may help as a treat in the training process.

Ferret Cages

Your baby ferret’s cage should be large enough to let him move around without getting hurt and you should also anticipate his growth. It’s always a good idea to get a cage that is easy to clean, as well. Check the bar spacing, too. You don’t want him to be able to slip through the bars and get loose.

When looking for an easy to clean cage, look for one with a plastic bottom. They’re usually the easiest type to clean. When you’re cleaning their cage, be sure to change and wash their bedding, too. Ferrets like soft bedding, sleep sacks and hammocks.

Ferret Litter Training

You should start litter training your baby ferret right away. The best time for training is right after they wake up or after they have eaten. So that they get the idea, place them in the litter tray and don’t let them leave until they have done their business. Give them a little treat when they’ve done what is expected. Never, ever punish them if they have an accident. They simply won’t understand and may become afraid of you. Be patient and eventually they’ll get the idea.

Ferret Toys

Baby ferrets like to have lot of toys to play with. Pet stores should have a good selection. Be sure, though, that whatever toys you choose can stand up to your ferret’s sharp little teeth. Make a habit of checking their toys for signs of wear as they will eventually chew through most of them.

Ferret Care

Baby ferrets need a lot of love and attention. They also need to visit the vet for vaccinations and anti rabies shots so they can remain healthy and stay with you for a very long time.
