throw him in a toilet
I’ve had four ferrets over the years and never had any luck with a litter box with any of them. Some people I know had success using an older cookie sheet or a lower pan. Ferrets tend to go in corners almost exclusively whether its a number one or two so to speak! I eliminated this problem simply by putting newspaper in corners as I was using it in their cages anyway, and it always works. Sure they may still go in another corner instead, but I found if you replace the paper after they go they go back to the same corner almost always.
Double up on the newspapers if you wish and don’t use any colored paper simply black and white and nothing glossy. Pick up a sunday paper every week and you will be all set, always worked for me.
Boys are always naughty and the sad thing is, is that they know they are doing it wrong too. We have 5 total here. Use puppy training potty pads under the boxes. Boys will not use it unless it is clean, and they are kinda lazy and don’t really like to get it. They think if they just back-up it is close enough. This is due to the way their plumbing is designed. Who wants a belly in the stuff??? You should put him in the box when you see him getting ready. Usually after he gets up for a minute. Reward him when he does good, even if you put him in there to do it. He will love treats so will make it a point to show you he can do it. Use big corner boxes with out alot of stuff in it, clean often, and be patient. Put down multiple layers of the pads and you can peel them off when needed. If it is a corner, cut them diagonally in half and save money by placing them along the front of the box to stick out and layer. Good luck.
http://pets-place.net/FreePetContest.html Templeton is the man for this month, Pierre is our winner from last month. BTW ferrets are NOT rodents, should be under general pets instead.
Ferrets are very picky. They usually go to the bathroom in corners. If you can move the litter box or whatever you are using to where they are using the bathroom at they might go in it. If not then try using something different like if you are using a litterbox then use newspaper. If you do get them to use the litterbox make sure you leave some in there when you change it that way they will smell it and know where to go when they need to use the bathroom.
When I got mine I would put the litter box in a corner and he would use the opposite side but I would put his poo in the litter box so he would know thats where it is supposed to go. He will actually be 6 months old on the 24th of this month and it took me that long to finally get him to use the litter box. Also, at first I used shredded paper like stuff from the pet store and he never used it until I actually put cat litter in there so I think helikes that better and it is easier to clean.
Well, my ferret got potty trained by putting a plastic-like container at first when he was little because that’s the age they learn, when he pooped or peed somewhere besides that we use to put his nose CLOSE, not in it, but close to where he went, and over time he learned, but they said my ferret was really smart
You need to train him to use the box. Pay close attention. When you see him about to go potty outside the box quickly lift him up and place him in the box. As you do, give him a command such as “potty goes potty box” (or whatever command you choose). Repeat as often as necessary until he’s gone in the box. As soon as he does, praise him while pointing to what he’s done. He just needs to know what you expect of him. Once he gets the message he’ll continue to use the box.
CInnamon Sprite has a good answer but I would add that instead of picking him up to put him in the box try pushing him gently backwards so that he has to lift his back legs up to get in the box. This worked a treat when training my ferrets, I don’t think they know how to get in the box if you just keep picking him up and putting him in……not unless he has a magic eye in his butt!!! LOLOL!
Good luck! xx
My ferrets used their litter boxes to sleep in. I never got them trained to use it. Some do and some don’t, I guess. They pick their corners and stick to them!
try putting his poo in the liter box and maybe he will get the idea that the poo goes in there
