sick ferret here.. What should i do?

My ferret is named buddy and he is a year and a half old. I feed him marshall farms premium, sparkletts for the water. For the past 2 days he has been having diarrhea. I don’t know if this is part of the problem or not, but the same time his bathroom problem started he started trying to drag his water dish around with him. He has successfully knocked out all of the water multiple times now. His sister does not have any of the same problems here.
Thanks,
Steve

Ferret Disease Information You Should Know

Ferrets are hardy little animals but they are susceptible to several diseases and health conditions that an owner should be familiar with so that the health of the pet can be maintained.  It is important to not only be able to know and recognize the symptoms but to know the best corrective action to take when they manifest themselves.  If the ferret’s health is properly maintained they can provide years of enjoyment.  Listed below are some of the conditions that deserve great vigilance.

The first consideration to observe after you bring home your new ferret is how is the digestive system working?  Ferrets are meat eaters and if they are fed plant based food somewhere it can cause problems.  They should only be fed a diet consisting of meat based protein with a maximum of 4% fiber.  Sometimes they will not be fed the proper diet and will suffer gastrointestinal problems.  If the new ferret is suffering from vomiting or diarrhea they more than likely are having problems with their digestive system.  Usually after being put on the proper diet regimen they will get over this problem.

ECE or epizootic catarrhal enteritis is a serious disease that attacks adult ferrets.  Animal health authorities believe that it is carried by baby ferrets who give it to the adults.  Green diarrhea is the primary indication of this serious disease which requires immediate attention by a veterinarian so anytime you see this symptom in your pet ferret it is advised to get it to a veterinian as soon as possible.  It is a life threatening disease to you pet but it can be cured with proper treatment over a period of time.

Parasites are another common problem with ferrets especially if its former owners weren’t careful about controlling this malady so immediately after bringing a new ferret into your home it is important to carefully inspect the animal for parasites.  A common parasite of ferrets are ear mites whose presence is indicated by the appearance of a brown substance in their ears and the ferret continually scratching its ears.  A common problem to all animals is fleas and ferrets are not immune to this distasteful condition.  Another common problem is heart worms that are caused by mosquito stings.  The encouraging thing about parasite problems is that they can all be controlled with the proper treatment.

Unfortunately ferrets are susceptible to several forms of endocrine disease.  One of the forms of this condition is when tumors appear in the ferret’s adrenal gland.  Tumors can show up in their pancreas.  This condition is referred to as insulinoma which causes difficulties with the ferret’s blood sugar levels similar to a human with diabetes.  Endocrine diseases are serious health threats to ferrets and proper treatment by a veterinarian is essential.

Ferrets of all age are also threatened by lymphoma.  This disease can attack a ferret with varying degrees of intensity.  As with cancer in humans it can be treated with different results.

To insure that your pet ferret lives a long and happy life keep on the alert for the ferret disease symptoms and be prepared to take action when they raise their ugly heads.

Your new ferret: Finding the best ferret diet

In the last fifty years or more… as the ferret has gained popularity as a pet… owners have grown increasingly dissatisfied with the food choices for them. Nothing is available, it seems, that meets all of their nutritional requirements. So it is not surprising to find a rapidly growing segment of ferret owners who have decided to take the nutritional health and status of their beloved pets into their own hands. Just as you find natural health enthusiasts in the human realm, you will meet the same type of people in the pet sector. And I only have one word to say to them, “More power to you.” (Okay that is more than one word.)

But, these individuals try as much as they can, to provide their ferrets with the meats, the organs and the bones needed for their pets’ health. They do not feed their ferret kibble using the very simple logic that kibble was not a part of any ferret diet some 2,500 years ago. I will try to explain, as concisely as possible, what they believe the benefits of a natural alternative diet for their ferrets are.

Some people refer to this alternative diet as an “evolutionary” diet. It ensures, according to its proponents, that the ferret is receiving the nutrient essential to his continued good health. They like to explain that the ferret needs nine essential amino acids. Essential amino acids are those the ferret’s system cannot produce itself, so it must get from its diet. There is just no other way. These substances are normally found in foods that the ferret’s wild relatives eat quite frequently. They include rabbits, mice, rats, birds, frogs, lizards, and even squirrels.

Calcium is another aspect of the diet that your ferret may be lacking. You may be surprised to learn that many manufactured canned cat foods — and even ferret foods — do not have any type of quality bone meal included. This means ferrets may be lacking in calcium. A healthy ferret diet does not necessarily mean that a ferret needs to have food available to him 24/7. A ferret who eats the proper diet may not want to eat again for another 10 hours. The untamed variety of ferret, or polecat, only ate once, sometimes twice a day.

Additionally, health conscious individuals say that the natural variety of foods that are a part of this evolutionary diet — from bones to meat to skin — helps to “flush out” the intestinal tract of the animal. This means that your ferret will have less hairballs and other unnecessary obstructions. It also may take care of some nutritional needs that the ferret has, that science has yet to detect. Not only that, these people say, just look at design of both your ferret’s jaw and his teeth. This leaves him with a limited chewing capacity. His teeth, they say, definitely evolved to cut meat and bone. Not to smash kibbles for up to ten hours a day. The other pretty amazing aspect of this diet is that it does not lead to dental cavities or other tooth problems. It is thought that the different textures of the prey foods help to massage the ferret’s gums and therefore clean the teeth in the process (Isn’t Mother Nature wonderful?)

Choosing a Ferret Diet: is a Natural Diet Right for Your Ferret?

Until the last 40 years, ferrets were fed what we refer to as a “natural diet,” which was similar to the diet of the domestic ferret’s wild ancestors. In recent years as ferrets have become more popular, they have been fed commercially prepared ferret, cat, and kitten diets. While this is convenient for us as owners, is it what our ferrets were meant to eat? What exactly is a natural diet, and what are the benefits and concerns associated with it?

Basic Ferret Diet And Nutritional Requirements

Ferrets are common household pets and in order to meet their dietary requirements many pet food manufacturers are now producing food supplements. Ferrets are carnivorous animals and they are able to digest their food very quickly. A ferret diet needs to be high in fats, fiber and protein. Though earlier most pet owners fed their ferret with kitten food this is now being considered harmful to these pets. A natural diet is given more preference as opposed to commercial food.

Places To Buy Ferret Food

Ferrets have a highly specialized diet and you may not be able to find it in your local grocery store, so where are good places to buy ferret food?

Firstly you should try your nearest pet store.  If they sell ferrets then they will also sell ferret food.  This is particularly good if you are going to the store you bought your ferret from and intend keeping him on the same diet.  It also gives you a chance to ask the assistants any questions you may have about your furry friend and see if they can give you advice, as well as allowing you to pick up any ferret specific toys or treats you may need.

If you bought from a breeder or there is no pet store near you stocking ferret food you can look online.  Bear in mind though that although the cost of the food may be slightly cheaper you may have to pay a delivery charge and wait a few days before it is delivered so if you are buying this way it’s best not to do it at the last minute.  However one advantage is that you can shop around to find a product and price that best suits you.  But don’t always go for the cheapest option.  Ferrets can be incredibly fussy eaters and will not appreciate you chopping and changing food.  This is particularly so with older ferrets who will have very firm ideas on what they do and don’t like to eat.

If you have completely run out and need food urgently then you can give them a very high quality cat food but this should only be done in an absolute emergency.  Most cat foods don’t contain the essentials that your ferret needs so you need to look for a product that contains at least 35-40% animal protein, 18% animal fat, less than 7% ash and less than 3% fiber.  You should also give them a drop of Ferretone with this.  Ferretone is a food supplement which contains amino acids and vitamins which will help to keep your ferret’s coat and skin healthy.

Under no circumstances must you ever give your ferret dog food.  It contains no nutritional value to them whatsoever.

Don’t feed them on leftovers from your meal.  Most human foods contain too much salt and other additives for them.  On top of this their short digestive systems cannot cope with fruit and vegetables or dairy products.

If you want to supplement your ferret’s diet with fresh meat then give them a small amount of cooked chicken, try to include chicken heart and liver in this if you can.  This has nutritional value that the muscle tissue cannot provide.  Alternatively you can give them some raw chicken breast which has been frozen and fully thawed.  However do not give them this as their sole diet.

Is my 5 month old ferret sick?

i have a 5 month old ferret and she is female, her name is Rukia. After i took her a bath she started to act weird like tired and she is usually happy and playful (this was not her first bath). She looks fine but when i look at her again she doesn’t. i looked online what she could have but nothing shows on what she has.she has already gotten her shots the rabbies and distemper. but im worried that she could be sick. she falls asleep whenever i carry her. She is eating fine but im very worried about her and i don’t think she needs a vet, im thinking its only that she is tired but please help me. i don’t want Rukia to die she is still a little baby and i care for her well.

How To Tell If Your Ferret Has A Disease

Edit Article |

Just like all animals ferrets get ill, but unlike dogs for example they go downhill so rapidly that you cannot take a wait and see approach but must get it treated immediately.  So how can you tell if your ferret has a disease?

Many of the symptoms of ferret illness are identical for several illness.  Weight loss, loss of appetite and alopecia to name but a few.  Take weight loss for example.  This could be indicative of an intestinal blockage if he has eaten something he shouldn’t , parasitic infection, lymphoma, endocrine disease or adrenal disease.  Although it may also mean that he doesn’t like what he is being fed and is not eating.  Before rushing out to the vet check his food dish and make sure that he is eating.  If not then try feeding your ferret something different.  If he is eating and still losing weight then yes, get him to the vet immediately.

Depression can also trigger more serious conditions in ferrets.  If your ferret has lost his cage mate or had a big upset in his life, such as moving house he can become depressed, signs of this will include a general loss of appetite, lack of interest in playing and appearing more lethargic.  It is generally accepted that ferrets carry Heliobacteria naturally and if your ferret is feeling down for any reason this can then attack the disgestive tract causing ulcers and worse.  Depression can also exacerbate any existing conditions your ferret may have so it’s essential to do all you can to maintain his health during this time.

Hair loss, or alopecia, can also occur for a variety of reasons.  If it is happening every year during late summer and early autumn don’t worry.  Ferrets moult at this time as their winter coat starts to come in, unfortunately some of them will lose hair in patches before the new coat comes through.  Keep an eye on it and if the shedding is continuing with now new growth then get him to the vet.  If he is losing hair all year round it may be that your furry friend has an allergy to flea bites in which case you need to get him treated.   Intact females will also suffer from alopecia if they have been in season too long.  The only way to treat this is to mate her with a vasectomised male and then once she has come out of season take her to the vet for either a jill jab or sterilization.

My Ferret is sick, whats wrong with her and how can i make her better?

She’s lethargic and wheezing. She wont eat very much, but she will eat her vitamin paste. Her cage was clean, she had food and water, and yet she will only lay there. Ive been giving her water and letting her rest in a basket with blankets next to me to keep her warm. She doesn’t really seems to be improving… She didn’t eat anything like bedding. Can someone please help me?
