Keeping an animal as a pet is no easy job, unless you have your heart into it, and are ready to spare a bit of your time and attention to tend to its needs. Most pets are considered part of the family, and the love and care they receive often creates a lot of envy in their human friends. Ferrets make wonderful pets, with their perky ways, and lighten up the houses they live in. Whether you call it fur balls or carpet sharks, however, you do not get to enjoy your ferret’s company unless you meet with all its needs, as ferrets are deeply dependent on their owners for survival.
Feeding your ferret
Ferret diet is principal in ferret care. Do not go about feeding your ferret with leftovers of your food, they require nutritious food, with high fat content and low protein content. Dry food is most advised, though canned ferret food can be given too, though you might not want to feed your ferret with large quantities of artificially synthesized food. Eggs provide the right content of protein, though check if your ferret can benefit from the food you provide. Food containing omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids are just right for ferrets.
Ferret toys
The way you would keep harmful toys away from a baby, remember to keep them away from ferrets too. Do not let them loose around the house hoping for them to find inanimate companions on their own. Choose and get them their toys, ideal ones being plastic balls, other plastic toys in the shape of other animals, hanging toys, teething rings, rattles, cloth bags, etc. Toys made of rubber and latex should be kept away from them, since they can chew and swallow them. Damaged toys should not be kept around them, and so shouldn’t toys with ropes, considering the risk of the ferret being strangled.
Training a ferret
Ferret training is important in ferret care, since disciplining it would largely help its behavioral patterns and minimize the risk of it turning into a nuisance of any sort. Attaching a litter pan to the cage will largely help, and encourage the ferret to keep using it by appreciating his first attempt to use it. Let your ferret know that you are not fond of its playful bites, by yelling or howling, and your ferret will look for better ways to convey its affection. You can also teach your ferret a few tricks and add to the joy of the time you spend with him.

How to litter train my ferret outside of his cage?
I have had my ferret for almost a week and before I had him he never had any sort of training. I have successfully litter trained him IN his cage, but not out of it. He always seems to go in the same place in my bathroom. Should I just put a box there for him to use since that is the spot he always goes? He fell in love with pooping in that spot, first night I brought him home that is where he went. Haha!

If like me you have a liking and an interest in animals, especially ferrets then I think that if you intend to adopt one then you should know the methods that are used to look after them. The correct ferret care is extremely important, as it will reflect on the animals general health and condition.
Once you have made the decision to purchase a ferret, there are a few things that need to be done before you even bring him or her home. There is the question of his living accommodation.
1. You will have to buy a cage for him, preferably made of metal. Plastic or wooden cages would be chewed up very quickly by the ferrets sharp teeth. The cage would have to big enough to allow your ferret plenty of room to run around. The cage should really be of several layers so that the ferret can climb up and down the cage and explore
2. The food and water containers for your ferret should be solid and reasonably heavy, this should prevent them being upturned and thrown about by your ferret. The size of these containers should equate to the size of the cage.
3. Ferrets love to sleep, in fact they can sleep from between 18 to 20 hours a day. This is natural for the ferret, so don’t wake him because his metabolism needs it.
4. When accessorizing your ferrets cage, keep in mind that they like to sleep a lot. Ferrets love hammocks to sleep in, this will give him somewhere safe and comfortable to crawl into.
5. If the ferrets cage is wire on the bottom, it would be a good idea to cover it with something like linoleum or a flooring tile. This will make it a lot more comfortable for the ferret to walk on. I would advise against using wood chips as these can cause respiratory problems. Any sharp edges may also cause damage to the ferrets feet.
6. It would be a good idea to put either a collar or a harness on your pet ferret. In the possible event of your ferret escaping, the details on it (his name and address) would allow him to be
returned to you.
7. When you give toys to your ferret you should always make sure that they are suitable. They should be able to stand up to rough treatment, and they should not be made of anything that is toxic.
There are quite a few things that you have to consider when buying a pet ferret, but the end result is well worth it. There is a lot of information on ferret care out there, and all of it is worth reading.

Does anyone know a better way to litter train a Ferret?
We have had a difficult time trying to litter train our two ferrets. We have tried everything under the sun. We even put boards on the bottom the cage to force them into the litter box. One of them were doing it just fine, but the female was small enough to fit through the boards a poo where she wanted. Once we took the boards back out, they both were going where they liked, not in the litter box but every once in a while. Please help!

If you’re thinking of getting a ferret, you probably have a lot of questions on your mind. Ferret care questions about behavior, diet, toys, health, cages, odor, accommodation etc. are the most common ones and indeed important. Fortunately, I’m here to answer them, so let’s get to it!
Are ferrets rodents?
No! Ferrets may look like rodents, but they actually belong to the family Mustelidae, so are related to polecats, sea otters, badgers, minks, wolverines and others.
How long do ferrets live?
The average ferret life span is 6-8 years, with some reaching even 10 years of age or more. A ferret is considered middle aged at around 3 years.
Do ferrets smell bad?
Coming from the mustelidae family, ferrets, especially adults, have a somewhat strong odor. Fortunately, you can alleviate this problem by descenting them.
What are their healthcare needs?
You need to bring your ferret to a veterinarian for regular checkups as well as for vaccinations. Doing these checkups once or twice a year will greatly improve the chances of catching a disease early and could save your fuzzy’s life.
What do they eat?
A ferret’s diet needs to be balanced. Special ferret food is recommended, but cat food of high quality is a very good alternative. Both types should be available in your local pet shop. The food needs to have 35 percent protein and 20 percent fat at minimum. It’s important to remember that fuzzies need more fat than cats, and the best are the so-called balanced fats (e.g. poultry fat) due to being rich in fatty acids.
Do ferrets drink water?
Yes. A ferret needs a permanently available source of fresh. They drink less water from bottles than from bowls, but if you can’t change the water in the water bowl once or twice a day, then you can use a water bottle.
What’s the right accommodation for a ferret?
Nowadays you have plenty of options when it comes to cages and houses for ferrets. The two important aspects you need to consider when looking for a cage are that it must be roomy and it must be safe. In addition, also think about making your job easier and find a cage that’s easy to clean.
Make sure your fuzzy can’t stick his head through any part of the cage and thus endanger himself. Furthermore, check that the cage you buy doesn’t have areas where your ferret’s feet can get stuck.
Fuzzies are crazy little bugger and they love to play and run around, so having a good cage where they can do this is paramount to their well-being (and your peace of mind).
What about sleeping and bedding?
Ferrets are one of the biggest sleepers you’ll ever see; they can sleep up to 20 hours a day. When it comes to bedding, they prefer dark padded areas. Place a sheet in one corner of the cage; this will provide them with a comfy and private corner for sleep and play.
Sleeping accessories such as hammocks and sleeping sacks make for great places to play and sleep and should be available in your local pet shop.
What can threaten my ferret’s life?
Diseases and other animals (e.g. dogs) pose a great threat to your ferret’s life. That’s why regular vet checks and supervision when playing with other animals (especially when they’re bigger than the ferret) is crucial to keeping them safe.
However, perhaps the biggest, day-to-day risk to your fuzzy’s life comes from much more mundane things, especially improvised toys your pet can find around the house. Since they love to chew things, pretty much anything within their reach can become a health hazard. Make a habit of checking the cage for anything they can chew and any toys that become damaged. Remove dangerous objects and replace damaged toys.
Ingesting a small toy or a piece of it will cause obstruction in the intestines, and your fuzzy will need a surgical intervention.
If you leave your ferret out of their cage (and you should do this at least once or twice a day), do so in a ferret proof room and never leave them unattended. They can easily hurt themselves!
Are ferrets social creatures?
Ferrets can be social. They can get along well with others of their kind, humans and some animals such as cats. It’s best to introduce them to humans when they’re 30 days old. The more you handle them, the faster they’ll become accommodated with you and the easier it will be for you to train them. Interact with your pet as often as you can and watch them respond to you and your actions. This will help create a strong bond between the two of you. They just love cuddling and it is a great feeling when they do it with you.
Do ferrets use litter boxes?
Yes, like cats, fuzzies can be trained to use litter boxes. It’s better to introduce them to the litter box as soon as possible, in order to increase your chances of training them in a short time. Still, some will get the hang of it sooner, some later, but eventually you will get them to use their litter box.
Are ferrets really that fun?
They sure are! Ferrets are fun and loving pets, and the more you interact and care for them the happier they’ll be.

Essential Ferret Care Information
As part of the ferret care information, you should also consider your ferret’s diet. When feeding your ferret, you have to make sure that their food consists of 20% fat and no less than 35% of protein. How can I train my ferret to stop scratching the carpet.?
He’s not just scratching to get out, because he scratches everywhere lol.
I would rather not lay cardboard or plastic down, because that’ll make him stop scratching, but he’s not learning that it’s bad behavior. I’m not worried about my carpet, I just want him to know that it’s bad behavior, and stop doing it, to where I’m able to leave him out and not have to worry about him getting under the cardboard/plastic or something you know?
I want to train him out of it, not just put up a block.
