How to litter box train my ferret.?

I bought my ferret from a pet shop, and he is already a year old. They told me he was litter box trained, but he isn’t using his box for anythung but sleeping. How can I train him?

How can I train my ferret to poop in it’s litter box?

He’s in a cage and always poops in the same corner. He’s only 2 months old. Petco told me to take his poop and put it in the litter box but this has not helped. I know for kittens when this happens there is a spray you can use so they don’t go in the same spot. Is there one for ferrets? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

When you decided that you are going to get a ferret then there is little room for doubt you will be spending some money on the little fur ball. Knowing their quirks and habits will best prepare you in having the best ferret care information second to none and on an optimal budget. How much he will demand from you is really up to you but there are a few things that you really shouldn’t skimp on when it comes to his overall care.

There are many places where one can find a new ferret; however, please make an effort in finding out all you can about the establishment from where you will eventually purchase your devoted new friend. If you present yourself as a ferret care information expert then the pet store will most likely be less inclined to try and sell you a bill of goods you don’t need. If you do buy your ferret from a pet store just remember a couple of things about this venue. Cheaper isn’t necessarily the best indicator of a good deal. The breed and color can affect the price you might pay but more important is his overall health and how well he has been taken care of. Depending on the store, you may be able to get a kit for $30 or you might want to spend as much as $120 or more. Only go to established pet stores that you or someone you know trusts. Pick their brains and ask plenty of questions to get all the ferret care information they are willing to share. If they are reputable they will answer all of your questions with a smile on their face and will do all they can to please you. A pet shelter is another place you can adopt your fuzzball and you can expect to spend anywhere from $50 to $300, perhaps less in some place and more in others. How much you spend is obviously up to you but as a general rule I would limit myself to no more than $100. You can always go the free route but make sure you do your homework before going down this road.

His home will be his castle so expect to spend a little here. He is going to need a place where he will be able to bounce, run, play, and sleep. Bottom line; his cage should be spacious enough to accommodate his active ways. You should be able to get an ample cage from around $85 to $200 and your primary concern should be his safety. Big is good but he has to be safe. Examine the bars to ensure they are sturdy and chew proof. Also pay special attention to the gaps between the bars. They are small enough to prevent him from sticking head through them possibly causing him harm.

Your new ferret will have a unique diet he needs for a long healthy life. Processed ferret food usually ranges from $15 to $20. This type of food is cheaper; however, it isn’t the best ongoing regiment he should be undergoing. Opt for premium foods as they are better for him and though they cost a little more, it won’t make a huge difference in your bank account because of the amount he will actually consume. If you want to give him the best foods then I would stick with natural nutrients he needs such as meat. When pondering his food just keep this very important rule in mind: ferrets need meat, high fat, low fiber, and very low carbohydrates.

An “emergency fund” is always a good idea when you have a pet, ferret or not. Earmarking $300 to $650 just for emergency situations will prepare you better for when and if he gets sick and needs medical care. This may seem a little much at first but you will always be ready and won’t be in a bind for when the time comes. Other areas where you will need to spend some money are for his water and food dishes costing anywhere from $4 to $15 each, his bed and materials starting at $15, and of course he will need plenty of toys varying in cost.

So as you can see these little guys will require some of your hard earned money but by having the best ferret care information hopefully you will save more than what you will spend.

How can I train my ferret not to bite my feet?

We adopted a ferret from a rescue centre. The lady we got her from was very knowledgable and advised us that Puglet (our ferret) was not a nipper and had not been previously abused. Puglet came home and has now been home for 2 days. She seems to be obsessed with my feet. My partners feet she leaves alone but she will chase mine without fail! I realise she is wanting to play but the game turns into me running away from her (if she gets my feet she bites very hard) I feel that by playing with her I am encouraging her to bite my feet. If she bites them very hard i say No! firmly and will put her in the cage for 5 mins. I will then take her out again and start to play again but not a few minutes later she will bite down hard again. She does not seem to want to play any other games besides chase & eat mums feet. Can anyone suggest what to do ? I want to do the right thing from the start and feel scared and apprehensive to play with her with is counterproductive. Thanks

Ferrets are those adorable little animals that are rapidly becoming a very popular pet. Even though they are becoming more widespread as a pet they are still considered an exotic animal that requires a little special ferret care. They are members of the mustelid or weasel family which is the largest in the order Carnivora. One of their undesirable characteristics is the ability to dispense a nasty odor which is mostly utilized to mark territory in the wilds. When they become pets one of the first concerns is to have them de-scented and if they are not going to be bred they should be neutered. These two actions will make them much nicer house guests. New ferrets should be examined be a veterinarian and vaccinated at the earliest opportunity.

Ferrets are hyperactive during the four hours per day they are awake. They burn lots of calories and require a special diet. As stated earlier they are members of the Carnivora order meaning they are meat eaters and need food that is high in protein and fat. Before they became more common pets owners had less choice of feeds specifically formulated for ferrets so high quality cat food was used but today most pet food suppliers have foods designed just for the cute little animals. The primary specifications to insist on are 20% fat and 35% protein. Ferret food is available in dry or damp forms. The dry form is preferable for several reasons and when used water is important to the ferret. The prefer drinking out of a dish or small bowl but a water bottle is cleaner and more sanitary.

The next consideration in ferret ownership is housing. They should be kept caged most of the time except for short periods of supervised periods of play and exploration out of the cage. For this reason the type cage used for the ferret will determine the health and happiness off the pet. Firstly it must be large and roomy with multiple layers is space allows. It should be easy to clean and constructed without any hazards where the ferret may get stuck. The floor is easiest to clean if it is covered with a hard plastic material that can be replaced whenever it becomes worn. Since they sleep so much their bedding is important and they enjoy comfortable conditions the same as we do. The two most common types of ferret bedding are sleep sacks or hammocks. The sleeping area should be in an area that is private and can be easily darkened

Ferrets are notorious gnawers. They will chew on just about anything and this characteristic can cause them great harm if they find some risky object in their cage, chew on it and swallow pieces of the object. They could suffer life threatening intestinal blockages so it is important to insure they aren’t tempted by inappropriate items in their cage or play environment.

If you start out with a baby ferret they should be keep in isolation for the first thirty days. At that age start introducing it to other humans and begin the socialization process. They like to be pampered and caressed and it makes training them easier the more they are exposed to and handled by humans.

You are going to discover that ferrets are adorable little creatures who like being around humans. It is advisable to let your ferret out of its cage two times per day into a ferret proofed room under supervision. Left to their own in a room they can get into all sorts of mischief. Also a good suggestion is to get them litter trained ASAP. Take proper care of your ferret and it will provide you with years of enjoyment.

What’s the best way to train a ferret to walk on a leash?

Mine acts as though a leash is some sort of torture device, yet he’s dying to go outside.

i have the CUTEST little 3 month old male ferret named Eliot and i want to train him to come to his name and put away his toys when done. I use bandits as rewards and always praise him well! and he wont let me hod him and when he sleeps he wakes up to the smallest of noises i thought ferrets go into DEAD SLEEP?

Expect your pet to sleep a lot. It will be a great idea to provide a place for your ferret to sleep inside its cage. This place should be as dark and as comfortable as possible for proper

1. Your ferret is playful and very energetic and active. If you decide to cage it, you will need to have the one that is very spacious, with some means for him to play. An ideal ferret cage size for one ferret should be at least 18 inches long, 18 inches deep and 30 inches wide. A good choice can be tunnels and multi-leveled ferret cage. It should be roomy enough so that you can have some space for additional cage accessories such as hammocks, toys, litter box, shelves, food dishes, water bottles and such, while still leaving enough area for your ferret to run around.

2. Expect your pet to sleep a lot. It will be a great idea to provide a place for your ferret to sleep inside its cage. This place should be as dark and as comfortable as possible for proper ferret care.

3. Ferrets cannot withstand to much heat. You have to consider the adequacy of circulating air in choosing a cage. a good choice is a wired cage. Just make sure that the gaps between the wires are not more than 1 inch by 2 inches wide, to ensure that your ferret will not be able to escape.

4. When choosing a cage make sure the wholes are not to big, so that your ferret doesn’t squeeze it’s head through. This can be dangerous as the ferret might get choked, or worse, it might manage to get free and go somewhere else. you sure wouldn’t want that to happen.

5. Remember to put toys inside your ferret?s cage so as not to get your ferret bored. They must be kept entertained as much as possible. This will lessen the possibility of them getting destructive.

6. Try to get a cage with plastic shelves or flooring. It is advised that you cover them with soft materials like tiles or shelf liners if you get the wired ones.

7. Although you can’t put a price on proper ferret care, you do have to consider price and your budget when choosing a ferret cage.

8. Glass aquarium is a no-no as a ferret cage! This can never be a good living quarter for your ferret because it will not allow him to roam around and be active. If you have enough time, you can make one other wise I would choose to buy a commercially manufactured ferret cage. When you have already chosen the perfect cage for your ferret, remember not to put it on a place that is directly near the window through which sunlight comes in the room. Put it at a place where it has good access to moving air, somewhere cool. It is also a good idea to let the ferret out of its cage whenever possible and just put some rugs on the floor where it can crawl under. Just be sure that you are ready with the mess that it might be able to create all over the place! Nevertheless, you will surely have fun watching your pet run around the house and burrow into just about anywhere he can do so.

How do I potty train a ferret?

We just got a new female ferret and she doesn’t act like she knows how to use a litter pan. We have tried to put her in it when she starts backing up but she just goes wherever she is. She will go in the litter pan but won’t go to the litter pan if she needs to go. I did not see a litter pan in her cage at the pet store. We had another ferret and he was like a cat, he just knew to use his pan. This is getting messy.
