If you are planning to keep or adopt a ferret, it is only wise for you to know all the essential information about this type of creature. Following a <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);” href=”http://my-ferret-care-guide.com/ferret-guide/”> ferret guide </a> can help you make the process of taking care of your pet a lot easier. Remember that if you can train your pet and take care of it properly, your relationship as pet and owner will be a lot stronger.

First and foremost, before finally deciding which type of ferret you wish to adopt, you might want to read a ferret guide for you to understand the behaviors of a ferret. You should know that these types of creatures are very curious and if left outside their cage, they will certainly run your house and turn it into chaos. This is the reason why it is important for you to be able to train your pet. When it comes to training ferrets, there could be at least one <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);” href=”http://my-ferret-care-guide.com/ferret-guide/”> ferret guide </a> that can help you how to do it and you should know that it may not come easy. You should be very patient when it comes to training your pet as ferrets can sometimes be very stubborn. Aside from that, you should also know that, although ferrets spend at least 18 hours sleeping, as soon as they woke up, they will definitely demand for your time so you have to be prepared about this.

The second thing that you might want to pay attention to is the environment where your pet will be leaving in. a cage is necessary to make sure that your pet will not get into valuable things during the times when you are not at home. It is also necessary if in case you have visitors or you need to clean your house. But of course, letting your pet leave its cage is important as well, even if it is just for 2 to 3 hours per day. Ferret-proofing your house is important so that you do not have to worry about your ferret hurting itself while playing around the house. You have to make sure that there will be no way for your ferret to escape or that the things that might cause untoward incidents are out of your ferret’s reached.

Your pet’s health is the most important thing that you should consider so you have to make sure that you are able to provide your pet with all the things it needs. If you are to follow a <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);” href=”http://my-ferret-care-guide.com/ferret-guide/”> ferret guide </a>, it will be a lot easier for you to learn about these things. Also, following a ferret guide can teach you almost all the things that can be good or harmful to your pet and this can help you maintain your pet’s health in order for your ferret to live a healthy life longer.

I need baby ferret potty training help.?

About a week ago I bought a baby ferret from Petco. He’s around 2-3 months old. Whenever I brought him home he started bouncing up and down and all over the place. He’s really hyper.
So the next day I decided that I’d start him on potty training.
I put the litterbox in and filled it up with some Aspen pellets. (The package said they were good for litterboxes) Whenever he woke up I stuck him inside the litterbox because I’ve heard that ferrets like to go as soon as they wake up. But right after I set him in there he jumped right out and started running all over the place!
How can I get this little guy to understand that he needs to go in the box? He keeps going in every corner EXCEPT the one with the box. I’ve tried covering the other corners up but he just moves the stuff that was there. Help someone pleeeease?
I can’t put a litter box over the place that he uses the most because the box is a little bit too large and it’s right underneath a slide in his cage that I can NOT move.

For anyone thinking of having a pet ferret, you must decide between adopting an adult or purchasing one of those adorable little baby ferrets that you can find in most pet stores.

Before you get taken in by those cuddly little faces, remember that there are many adult ferrets in shelters that are in need of a good home. These ferrets will make great pets and you can probably get one that is quite young even from a shelter. Unfortunately, many people do not realize what the commitment needed to care for a ferret which is why these wonderful animals end up in shelters and rescue home. Before you adopt a ferret – either adult or baby, make sure you understand and are ready to commit to what it takes to properly care for these lively and entertaining pets.

I think that adult ferrets can make just as good pets as baby ferrets and may even be a bit easier to care for in the beginning. No matter what their age, ferrets are very curious and will get into anything and everything. My pet ferret lived to be 7 ½ years old and was running around and getting into all kinds of mischief right up until the end. When they are babies, however, they do have a bit more energy and are even more inquisitive so they will require more supervision.

If you do adopt a baby ferret (called a kit), you will have the additional job of training it. An adult might already be trained, unless the previous owner didn’t take the time. You will need to train your ferret not to nip as well as to use the litter box. During training, you will have quite a few ferret accidents to deal with and these can be a bit messy.

In addition to the added job of training, baby ferrets will also cost much more than a ferret you adopt from a shelter. Also, although most ferrets are good natured, you can be assured that the demeanor of a ferret from a shelter is already known while a kit could grow up to be nippy or cantankerous and you have no way of knowing ahead of time.

Should you decide that you must have a baby ferret, there are many things that you will need to provide him including toys, entertainment and a safe environment. There are special toys for ferrets, but they also like cat and kitten toys so you can buy these for him too. Be sure to avoid anything made from flimsy rubber as they can eat this and will not digest it well. A cage is important when it comes to providing him a safe environment as your ferret needs to be safely secured when you are not there to watch him.

Whether you get a baby or not, the ferret makes an ideal pet for almost anyone. Be sure, however, before you adopt a ferret that you have the time and energy necessary to provide this lively pet with the care and attention he needs.

Ferrets — the Ideal Pet

Before taking your ferret home, make sure that your ferret has been given the necessary vaccinations. It is also a good idea to consult a local veterinarian for information on common ferret diseases and their cure. Ferrets live roughly for about 7 to 10 years. A ferret costs around $75 to $120, depending on its age and from where you buy.

Contrary to common belief, ferrets can be trained effectively though it may not be as easy as training cats or dogs. Training ferrets to learn the rules of the house will be a gradual process. The best way to reward a ferret for positive behavior is by giving it food. For behaviors that are not acceptable, paying no attention to the ferret or confining it in the cage will work wonders. As ferrets move around a lot, they tend to mess up the rooms. Nipping is also a major problem associated with ferrets. Nevertheless they can be trained to use the litter and not to nip.

Good ferret care is important for raising a healthy and happy ferret. Frequent interaction with their owners help ferrets get used to their new homes. It is also a good idea to spend a lot of time with your new pet ferret especially during the early days of domesticating. Ferrets that are used to playing with people since their baby days tend to be more friendly and playful. Though ferrets sleep almost 15 to 16 hours a day, they are very active the rest of the time and love to play with toys and frolic around.

Ferrets are carnivores by nature and require a diet rich in animal protein and low in fiber. Ferrets were generally given cat or dog dry foods before, but nowadays specially packed ferret foods are available in pet shops. Totally Ferret, Ferrotone and Zupreem are the most common ferret food brands among ferret owners.

A variety of ferret accessories are now also available on the market, which include toys, cages and other innovative items. Large cages should be bought complete with floors, stairs and tunnels. If you have enough space in your backyard, you can also make a natural abode for your pet, including hammocks, hanging bunks, cozy beds and custom litters.

Ferret potty-training?

I’m having a bit of trouble potty-training my young ferret and could use a bit of advice. He has a litter box, and items in the other corners of his cage, yet he still refuses to go in his designated ‘spot’. I’ve talked to the folks at PetSmart and they simply told me: “You have to have a box in every corner. Ferrets are stupid creatures and won’t learn any other way.” Personally, I found that offensive but could it be the truth?

Creating that relationship between you and your pet always starts with patience. Naturally, these pets need to adapt and live comfortably in any living space. Ferrets, in particular, are very active pets. They bite, nibble, and even go to unusual areas including floorboards and closets. One concern among ferret owners pertains to training and disciplining their pets. Knowing how to train a ferret not to bite or poop in the carpet is definitely included in this list. So, how are we going to instill discipline to our beloved ferrets? Kindly read the following tips:

Make use of a strategy that is positive and reinforcing. This can be done by means of a reward system or directly referring to your pets by their name. If you notice that your ferret constantly bites while playing, perhaps you can start by calling him, using a definitive yet not ear-piercing voice. Make him see the difference between you appreciating his ways from the moments he commits mistakes. In the process, your ferret will soon recognize either passivity or intolerance once you speak.

If you want to know how to train a ferret, whether not to bite or use the litter tray, it is advisable to study your pet’s ways. Remember that every unfavorable act refers to some sort of provoked behavior. Pay attention while your ferret plays. Try to see if something has been compelling him to bite or nibble. Was it due to somebody else’s action? How about your ways with him during playtime? Remember, ferrets tend to bite whenever they are in a playful mood. Perhaps, what you have to learn is to minimize and veer their attention away from some specific things or toys.

How to train a ferret also involves time. Remember, your duty as an owner does not end in providing your ferret with essentials. While food and cages are considered important, you have to pay close attention to them once in a while.

Using the litter box is also a major concern. Many ferret owners find their pets littering onto carpets and dark areas like closets and drawers. Learning how to train a ferret may start with supplying the needed items, like placing a good number of litter trays on areas such as behind doors or inside closets. Try to evaluate the places where you often see them doing these things and remedy it by means of placing the litter boxes strategically.

Most importantly, once you notice that your pets are slowly learning, try to be appreciative with them. Give them their favorite food or treats. Show your affection by spending some quality minutes. As a result, what you have is either a bite-free day or a poop-free carpet.

This is understandable considering the number of ferret owners in states such as Minneapolis and Illinois. On the contrary, one might ask, “Is buying a ferret in California legal?” The answer is no.

House-Breaking Your New Ferret

Ferrets can be great pets. But they can create a lot of mess if they are not house-broken properly. Therefore, one must train a pet ferret to use a litter box to relieve itself, just like a cat.

Before your pet ferret has been house-broken, make sure that you do not let it run around the house for the fear of dirtying the house. A ferret can be made to use a litter box almost 75% of the times, but for this your training will have to be strict. Also, you will need to show a lot of perseverance in this case. In any case, do not be surprised if you find a little mess in some corner of your house, even after your ferret has been house-broken. How obedient a ferret is in this case will depend upon how well and for how long you train it.

The key to house-breaking a ferret is patience. One needs to give the ferret immense amount of time to understand that it relieving one’s self in any part of the house is wrong, and that the only place he can relieve itself is the litter box. But there is no standard time frame in which a ferret can be house-broken. The training period can extend from some weeks to even some months.

One of the effective ways to get a ferret to start using the litter box is to allow it to run around a small room, may be the bathroom before it relieves itself. Another important aspect of house-breaking a ferret is to learn when a ferret needs to use the litter box. Like every other animal, ferrets will need to relieve themselves shortly after they wake up from a nap or after they have had a meal. Therefore, you will do well to take a precautionary step and put the ferret inside its litter box just after these two activities.

You may have to be a bit stern and firm with your pet. Do not let the ferret out of the litter box before it is done with its chores. While training a ferret, giving the ferret a treat just as soon as his business in the litter box is done, is a good way house-breaking the pet.

While the ferret is being house-broken, or even after that, there may be a few incidents where it may not have used the litter box. Do not punish the animal in such a case. Physically punishing the ferret will instill your fear in his heart, and it may drive the animal away from you emotionally, rather than drawing the two of you closer.

What To Do With Your New Ferret

Edit Article |

So, you have decided that you would like to have a ferret as your new pet. They would make an adorable addition to your life and your home. These amazing animals can be trained to use a litter box, just like cats. But before you go ahead and allow your new ferret roam freely around your, you will need to take some precautions.

Of course your new ferret should never be let loose in your home. Let it become acquainted with its new surroundings from the comfort of its cage before you decide to let it roam around your home. You must also teach your new ferret how to use a litter box. Depending on your ferret and how much time you spend on litter training, most ferrets will use the litter box about 75% of the time. Some ferrets will use the litter box every time but, with most, you might find a “present” in the house occasionally. Litter box training may take up to several hours per day for several months. The more time and attention you give to it, the more likely it is that you will have a litter box trained ferret. The best way to begin litter box training is to let your ferret run around a small space, like a bathroom first.

Usually, ferrets will use the litter box within a couple of minutes of waking up or after they finish eating. So, when your ferret first wakes up you should put it in the litter box. Make sure he goes to the bathroom before letting him get out of the box. Once it done going, immediately give him a treat. The point is to try to get him to associate going in the litter box, with then receiving a treat. You must never physically punish a ferret for any reason, especially if they have an little accident in the house. Using physical punishment will only cause them to be afraid of you and they do not associate their behavior with that kind of punishment. If you want your ferret to be able to roam freely around the house, then you need to be willing to a little cleaning up after them sometimes.

Another thing you will need to do, before you allow your ferret to run free, is to “ferret proof” your house. Ferret proofing means making your home safe for a ferret. They are little curious creatures an d they manage to find their way into small places. A good thing to remember is if their head will fit into a place, then their bodies will too. Start by crawling around your house on your hands and knees while looking for small holes, crevices, loose ventilation covers, etc. Be sure to check every room that you plan to let your new ferret explore. Remember to inspect appliances for small holes or places that ferrets may be able to get inside of. Ferrets are very curious creatures that are also really good climbers, so anything may become a “play area” for ferrets. Ferrets may be able to get up into some refrigerators and may have the potential to get hurt on the fan. The dryer tubing also looks like a lot of fun to a ferret. They can tear a hole in it and end up getting outside through the vent. Many couches can also be a potential danger for ferrets, since some of them have thin fabric lining underneath. Ferrets may easily get through the lining and the be able to get up inside of the couch to the springs.

Many ferret owners enjoy allowing their ferret to run around the house and get some extra exercise. But, the most important thing for you new ferret is that they have a safe place to run and have fun.

A ferret is a domestic animal. Most domestic ferrets have black, brown or white fur. Although modern breeding has made an array of colors and patterns available today. Ferrets are on average 20 inches in length which includes a 5 inch tail and they weigh about 2 to 5 pounds. They have an ordinary life span of 7 to 10 years. Ferrets are also kept as pets in many homes. If you love cute and quiet pets then ferrets might be the best pet for you.

The first reference of domestic ferrets was in 400 B.C. in Greek writings although some believe the ferret to have been domesticated long before that by the Egyptians. Ferrets have also been used throughout time to flush rabbits and even be carried on ships and rat exterminators. In Modern times they have been used as aircraft and conduit wire runners.

Before buying a ferret and bringing it home you should make sure that they have the necessary vaccinations. You should find out if they have been fixed or descented (most in us pet stores are). Also consider visiting your local shelter and rescue a ferret in need of a loving home. You should take great care in providing a large enough cage for them to move about in and there should be a separate places for them where they can sleep and eat properly. There are many cage items available including cozy beds, hanging bunks, and hammocks. A ferret cage should be kept indoors and out of direct sunlight. Ferrets are very sensitive to temperature changes and are vulnerable to heat stroke at temperatures above 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Today there are many ferret rescue organization that are established for the welfare and safety of domestic ferrets. These organizations are working for to educate the public about the total care of the ferret as a pet.

Ferrets can be trained efficiently but it is not as easy as training a dog. The best way to train a ferret is with short training session as they don’t all have the longest of attention spans. Positive reinforcements such as treats and praise work well for encouraging positive behavior such as using a litter box. Ferrets are social by nature and need your attention or they may become depressed and maybe even stop eating. If you do not have about 4hrs a day to devote to your ferret than it might not be the pet for you. Nipping is also a problem of ferrets but the habit is easily broken if you are consistent with your training.

Ferrets are strict carnivores and should only be fed meat or ferret food made from mostly meat products. Ferret food containing fish as a main ingredient should not be used. Ferret food should be around 40 percent animal protein and about 25 percent fat. It is also important to trim your ferrets nails every two or three weeks.

Ferrets can make great pets but they are not for everyone, make sure your comfortable with all the aspects of owning a pet ferret before you commit to purchasing or adopting one.

Ferret Rescue and Their Duly Importance

You know them as furry little animals, known by various names like jills (female ones) bobs (male ones) and kits (Ferret babies). You know they have been domesticated for thousands of years now. Little, adorably vivacious creatures which make wonderful pets, sleeping like babies most part of the day, (precisely 18 hours), and amuse their owners with their playful, mischievous ways; you have plenty of reasons to keep one as your pet. A lot of people around do, actually.

The Good Cause of Ferret Rescue

Humans are the most selfish of all the creatures in nature. As a species we are the most advanced and this has enabled us to exploit all of the natural resources including animals. Since the beginning of evolution, humans have domesticated animals and used them for varied purposes. Today people keep animals as pets for their amusement and companionship.
