Ok I just got my first ferret, and she gets really excited and bites me. Other days she is very nice and doesn’t bite me. It is almost like she is thirsty for my flesh if she can see it.I used to wear gloves but decided what she needed was human contact so I stopped, but she bites a lot… What are some tricks to get her gentle??

Ferret/litterbox training? Please help.?
Hello, I have two ferret, and I adopted them already train and all, including litterbox trained.
Recently, we ran into a problem, they seem to want to go potty right next to the litterbox, rather than in it like they used to..
Its getting ridiculous now.
How can I teach them to go potty inside the litterbox rather than beside it?
[Yes, the litterbox is big enough && is always clean]

ferret potty training question?
Alright, my husband and I have had our ferret for about a week now. I know thats not a ton of time, but we are already at a loss. Our ferret seems to definitely keep pooping to the corners, and is progressing along nicely with litter training, but she pees EVERYWHERE. All over her bedding, in her food, just everywhere. We clean out her cage and an hour later its like we never even cleaned it. The smell gets pretty bad, we’re going through soft blankets like crazy, its a losing battle to keep her cage clean and liveable. any suggestions?
She has been fixed & de-scented, also has had her shots.

Ferret litter training?
Okay so I have a ferret that was sort of forced upon me to take care of. I would really like to train him to take up using the litter box. He poops a lot and it’s not too fun to clean out a dirty cage.
A few questions:
Can I use normal cat litter? Or is there a special kind of litter I need?
Will he cover it up like a cat? (This really doesn’t matter, I’m just curious)
Also, I was thinking about doing the method of putting feces already in the box, so he recognizes it as a bathroom area.
Does anyone have any suggestions with training and such? I can’t always keep an eye on him to check if he’s going in the right spot, as he lives on my back porch due to the smell.
Anyone who has litter trained a ferret before, your advice would be greatly appreciated (:
Thank you for the advice. Usually when it gets too hot on my back porch, we bring him inside. The same goes for cold weather. My back porch has windows that open up to screens and I also have a ceiling fan. If he’s panting, or if it’s hot enough to sweat, then we don’t leave him out there (:

Is an adult trained ferret easier to care for than an untrained high energy puppy?
The reason why I’m asking is because people often say that ferrets are more work than dogs. I have a Pomeranian puppy, and, being as small as she is, she gets into EVEYTHING. Just like a ferret! I plan on adopting an adult ferret from a rescue. So, is an adult trained ferret easier to care for than a high energy untrained puppy?

The Basics to Ferret Hunting

For thousands of years, ferrets have been trained by hunters and farmers to help them in hunting down rabbits in farms. In as early as the 6 BC, ferrets have already been used in control rabbit plagues in the Balearic Islands. Up until now, ferret hunting is a distinguished activity in which many participate, especially in countries that have a growing rabbit population such as the United Kingdom.
Due to the sustenance of such use for ferrets, ferret hunting has already been termed as ferreting. Indeed ferrets are great animals in hunting down animals like rabbits and rodents. Their lean and long bodies, also their natural instincts further help them in sustaining a long chase. In addition, unlike other predators such as dogs, ferrets have the natural tendency to stick in holes, tunnels and burrows, which make them good predators even underground.
If you want to pursue ferreting with your pet ferret, then what you must know that it is not entirely an easy activity. It may true that it is innate with the ferrets to be hunters, however proper training is still needed for your ferret to go the right way. Also, ferreting is not made for all ferrets. Some hunters prefer hunting with a female ferret rather than a male one since they have a tendency to eat their prey after catching it. When this happens, the inevitable ‘lay up’ occurs wherein the ferret will sleep right away after eating its meal. It will be more difficult for you when this occurs since you have to dig out your ferret and the eaten prey out of the hole.
In order to be successful in ferret hunting, what you can do to help your ferret is to block all other holes where the ferret and its prey may exit to. Only leave open a hole in which you want your prey to come out of. Just outside this certain hole, you can put up a purse net, so that when a prey comes out of it, it will directly go into the net. This is the conventional method for most hunters and at times it has been proven very effective. However, there are also times that it may take such a long time before the prey and the ferret come out of the hole. What you can do in this instance is to purchase a tracking device that you can put as a collar for your ferret. It will help you in tracking the location of your ferret so that after the chase, it will be a lot easier for you to find it.
Ferrets are indeed reliable hunters in the field. They may not necessarily have a good vision underground but what makes them great hunters are their heightened senses. In addition to this, if you have an albino ferret, it will become a lot easier for you since they are much obvious to spot after a hunt.
Ferret hunting is relatively easy. Moreover, training your ferret is also a fairly easy task. Since ferrets are natural hunters, the process of hunting and scouting is already innate in them. As their master, what you must succeed at is polishing the hunting skills of your pet ferret for a more fruitful hunt in the future.

Ferrets as Pets – Things You Need to Know
Ferrets may not be a common animal choice for pets. Many people find ferrets nice to have and as easy to keep as pet, if not easier, as other typical pets like dogs and cats.
By the year of 1996, according to a study by California State Bird and Mammal Conservation Program, approximately 800,000 or more domestic ferrets were probably kept as pets in United States.

Choosing a Ferret Diet: is a Natural Diet Right for Your Ferret?
Until the last 40 years, ferrets were fed what we refer to as a “natural diet,” which was similar to the diet of the domestic ferret’s wild ancestors. In recent years as ferrets have become more popular, they have been fed commercially prepared ferret, cat, and kitten diets. While this is convenient for us as owners, is it what our ferrets were meant to eat? What exactly is a natural diet, and what are the benefits and concerns associated with it?

Make Your Ferret Litter in the Right Place
Posted: Jun 22, 2010 |Comments: 0

To train your ferret to litter in the right place, the best way is to get them a ferret litter box or tray. They can be easily trained to litter in the same place because by nature, they prefer to litter in the same place everyday. They are clever animals, so it is easier for you to train them. Ferret litter boxes and trays should be bought along with your pet itself. These trays should not be just placed in the cage alone but also in some points in the house after noticing where your ferret litters the most.
Litter boxes are made of different kinds of material. The best one for you and your pet is the one which has recycled newspaper in pellet form. It is environment-friendly, does not cause any allergies and it absorbs better than wood shavings. Wood shavings are fine but never give your ferret any aromatic wood in its litter as it may cause respiratory problems.
Never get your pet a litter box made out of clay as it may block the nose of your ferret. Also if by chance, it drags itself after littering, the clay may get stuck in its rectum.
Always keep your pet litter box in a corner of the cage well away from your pet sleeping place. Always remember to scoop the litter at regular intervals. Also clean it completely when you are cleaning the cage. When cleaning the cage, remember to clean or change your ferret’s bedding.
Notice whether your ferret litters in the right place everyday. If your ferret gets into the habit of littering in the box correctly then give it a treat. But however do not punish or scream at your ferret for littering in the wrong place. Ferrets can get sensitive and will not train easily after that.
Ferrets usually prefer a particular corner to litter. Find out your ferret’s favorite corner and keep the ferret litter box there to train it easily. Ferrets need to realize that litter boxes are meant for its personal use for it to get completely trained.

Tips and Tricks For Successful Ferret Litter Pan Training
Like all other living beings on this planet, ferrets too have the need to relieve themselves of toxins and waste from the body. If you have a ferret as a house pet then you can train the animal to use a ferret litter pan. This training is not difficult as ferrets are very receptive animals. During the initial stages of the training the ferret may have a few accidents; this is acceptable. Positive reinforcement is the best way to ensure that the animal learns to use the litter pan quickly.

Having a pet in your house is like having another member add to your family. If you are living alone, then a pet can be a great company. Therefore people name their pet ferrets and form an even closer bond with them. When you name your ferret you want to sound special and unique just like you would name a person. But this is no easy task.

One of the prime concerns of getting a pet is litter training. Ferret litter training is essential and can be done with some patience. Remember that this is a must not just for your sake but also to maintain hygiene and health of the animal. Ferrets by nature like to remain clean hence training is easy.

Is an adult trained ferret easier to care for than a high energy untrained puppy?
The reason why I’m asking is because people often say that ferrets are more work than dogs. I have a Pomeranian puppy, and, being as small as she is, she gets into EVEYTHING. Just like a ferret! I plan on adopting an adult ferret from a rescue. So, is an adult trained ferret easier to care for than a high energy untrained puppy?

Buying A Ferret
Baby ferrets, which are known as kits, can be bought from a breeder, a pet store or adopted from an animal shelter. An adult male ferret is called a hob and an adult female ferret is referred to as a jill.
Adopting A Ferret
When baby ferrets are ready for adoption they will have already been weaned and be on solid food. Even still, their teeth won’t yet be sharp enough to chew any hard food. You’ll want to soak their food in warm water for approximately 5 to 10 minutes to make it easier for them to eat.
The best type of food to give them would be the kind that is specially formulated for ferrets – and specifically for baby ferrets. Some people will opt to feed their ferret cat food. If you do this, make sure it’s a premium quality food and check the protein and fat levels very carefully. You want to make sure that you’re getting the proper amounts of protein and fat that your ferret requires.
Ferret Diet
Be aware that your kit needs more fat and protein than a kitten does. Ferrets have a rapid gastrointestinal transit time of about 3 to 4 hours. This means that they need high-quality, easily digestible protein sources. Make sure that any food you give to your baby ferret contains 35-40% protein and 20% fat.
Your kit needs a good balance of meat and poultry products to be able to avoid any risk of urinary tract or intestinal blockages. On top of this, your ferret needs to have water available, either in a dish or bottle, at all times.
What About Ferret Snacks?
Strictly speaking, ferrets just don’t need snacks. However, you can offer very small portions of bananas, crackers and raisins. These kind of snacks may help as a treat in the training process.
Ferret Cages
Your baby ferret’s cage should be large enough to let him move around without getting hurt and you should also anticipate his growth. It’s always a good idea to get a cage that is easy to clean, as well. Check the bar spacing, too. You don’t want him to be able to slip through the bars and get loose.
When looking for an easy to clean cage, look for one with a plastic bottom. They’re usually the easiest type to clean. When you’re cleaning their cage, be sure to change and wash their bedding, too. Ferrets like soft bedding, sleep sacks and hammocks.
Ferret Litter Training
You should start litter training your baby ferret right away. The best time for training is right after they wake up or after they have eaten. So that they get the idea, place them in the litter tray and don’t let them leave until they have done their business. Give them a little treat when they’ve done what is expected. Never, ever punish them if they have an accident. They simply won’t understand and may become afraid of you. Be patient and eventually they’ll get the idea.
Ferret Toys
Baby ferrets like to have lot of toys to play with. Pet stores should have a good selection. Be sure, though, that whatever toys you choose can stand up to your ferret’s sharp little teeth. Make a habit of checking their toys for signs of wear as they will eventually chew through most of them.
Ferret Care
Baby ferrets need a lot of love and attention. They also need to visit the vet for vaccinations and anti rabies shots so they can remain healthy and stay with you for a very long time.

Ok, so you want to keep chickens at home and the next question is how to go about housing them properly? Do you buy them a readymade home or do you build a chicken house for them? Obviously, there are pros and cons with any choices that you make but, if you want to give your girls the safest and best possible egg laying environment then the DIY option is by far the better of the two I think.

Ferrets love to play and they may sometimes go really crazy over their own <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);” href=”http://my-ferret-care-guide.com/ferret-games/”> ferret games that they can turn your house into a warzone. So you have to make sure that the ferret play time is included in your pet’s training program, as this will allow your ferret to pass the time with lots of fun and less mess.
One of the most popular ferret games is hide-and-seek, jumping and rolling inside a blanket and fake battles. Ferrets also love dragging items from one place to another, so if you do have something important then you might as well save it or it will be lost or misplaced. If you do know your ferret’s behavior, it will be a lot easier for you to learn about its favorite game and of its favorite partner. Some ferrets would love to play chasing and there may be sometime when it will try to get your attention. If that happens, then you should know what ferret game it wants to play and start playing with your pet. The owner’s participation in the game is essential as this can be a way for owners and pets to create a strong bond between them. Breeders have suggested various <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);” href=”http://my-ferret-care-guide.com/ferret-games/”> ferret games , including the following:
•Maze game – you may or may not know it, but ferrets are very curious creatures and they would love any type of training games, as long as they enjoy it and they are having fun. The maze game is considered as your pet’s favorite ferret game. You may start playing this by using carton boxes and big cards. Using these materials, you may create a huge maze which is full of rooms and tunnels. You may also try putting pieces of foods in scattered places within your maze – particularly where the exit is. Your ferret game will surely be enjoyed by your pet and it can play this game for hours until it finally reaches the end of the maze. If you play this ferret game as often as possible, there is a huge possibility that your ferret will eventually memorize the maze and will take shorter time for it to get out of the maze.
•Digging game – ferrets do love digging games and this can also be a good training for them. To play this ferret game, you may take a big wooden box and fill it with sand. You may choose to wet the sand to allow your pet to dig for hours. Make sure to put something underneath to set a goal for your pet and make sure it sees what you put in before burying the item. If you do the same <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);” href=”http://my-ferret-care-guide.com/ferret-games/”> ferret game , your ferret will be able to dig faster each and every time.
