Farret (or Ferret) Cage

Your pet will need to spend a great deal of time in the cage.  The ferrets should only be allowed out of their cages when you are able to closely supervise them, hopefully several hours per day.

Cages are available in a wide variety of designs.  Here are features that I recommend:

  • Multi-level – Ferrets love to climb, so I recommend a cage that has at least two levels, preferably three.
  • Solid surface floor – Most cages come with a wire floor, which can cause harm to ferrets’ sensitive feet.  We used some scrap kitchen flooring to stick to the bottoms of our cages.
  • Room for a hammock – These little guys love to sleep in some pretty strange positions.  Hammocks lend themselves perfectly to a ferret’s body.  We usually keep two hammocks on different levels of the cage.  The hammocks have different textures (material) to give our pets a choice.
  • Room for a litter pan – Ferrets can be litter trained, so this makes clean up much easier.

An important note:  While you may line the bottom of the cage with a variety of materials, make sure you never use cedar chips or shavings as that can be toxic to ferrets.  Most other types of wood are fine.
