Farret Or Ferret Overview

A ferret makes a truly magnificent pet for the right person.  You must be willing to be highly dedicated to its care and to interacting with your new pet.

Ferrets are very intelligent.  That can be both good and bad news.

On the one hand, their intelligence means that they can be trained more easily than most domesticated animals, with the exception of dogs.  They will learn your habits and your expectations.

On the other hand, that same intelligence leads to a curiosity that can sometimes get them into trouble.  They will explore anything they can get to…and  they can get to a lot of things!  Consequently, you must always keep a very close eye on them whenever you give them freedom from their cage.  It takes no time at all for a ferret to get himself or herself into trouble.

Ferrets, like any animal, are susceptible to diseases.  Check with your vet, one who is quite familiar with ferrets to learn what symptoms to watch for and appropriate preventive steps such as the necessary vaccinations.

Unfortunately, too many of these wonderful little creatures have been bred.  Consequently, if you want to bring one of the “fuzzies” into your home, we strongly recommend that you adopt one from a shelter near you.  Click here to try to find a shelter near you.

Farret or Ferret Vet – Veterinarian

As soon as you bring a new pet ferret into your home, you ought to get established with a veterinarian who has experience in caring for ferrets. You’ll discover that numerous vets will only treat the pet species that have higher populations (dogs and cats).

Do not wait until you pet is ill prior to making that very first appointment. Schedule a check-up to establish a base line of info about your lovable new friend. Should you fuzzy came with immunization records, take those with you on your very first vet visit. Should you do not have written records of immunizations, assume that your pet has had none. Follow the doctor’s advice regarding immunizations.
If you’ve friends with ferrets, they may be able to recommend a great doctor with the essential experience. Numerous areas also have ferret clubs (examine on the internet or within the phone book) or ferret shelters. Call, write or email such an organization. They will frequently have a list of qualified doctors.

Ferrets are extremely susceptible to feline distemper, so all ferrets ought to get that vaccination. Most jurisdictions within the U.S. and Canada require that ferrets also be vaccinated against rabies.

Plan to remain at the office (or really near it) for at least half an hour right after the immunization injection. Some ferrets will have allergic reactions. The very first noticeable symptom or this would be labored breathing. As long as you are able to seek medical assist within a really short period of time of the onset of such symptoms, there will be no lingering difficulties with this.

There are plenty of  fast food restaurants near our veterinary office. Right after the immunizations, I merely go via the drive in window, pick up some lunch or breakfast and watch the little ones really carefully while I eat. Ought to any reaction occur, I am only a couple minute away from emergency assist.

Prepare yourself for a relatively high bill. Granted ferrets are smaller than a Great Dane, but that doesn’t mean that their medical care is cheaper. Veterinarians do not charge by the ounce, and the ferrets are not covered by your health insurance plan!

Farret or Ferret Scratching

Manka, 6 month old female (jill) ferret (Muste...
Image via Wikipedia

Ferrets occasionally get a poor rap of becoming destructive pets. Our ferrets in no way triggered any harm except…

These small guys are inherently inquisitive. They adore to explore their surroundings–a truth that may occasionally get them into trouble if they aren’t in a safe environment.

The one in the picture is busy exploring the potting soil around a plant.  (Be careful, some plants are toxic.)

They hate something that stands within the way of their explorations, which we learned the tough way. Our ferrets don’t like closed doors if they believe there’s something of awareness about the other side.

At our summer house, we maintain the home towards the guest area closed, unless we have guests. 1 time 1 of us had to put some thing away in that area. Regrettably, 1 of our ferrets happened to determine us go into the area and close the home once again upon our return.

The following time he was released from his cage for play time, he instantly went to that home and started scratching, obviously willing it to open. Whenever we would attempt to awareness him in some thing else, he would desert us to return towards the home for a lot more insistent scratching.

In frustration, we opened the home to permit him to explore the area, hoping that 1 great inspection would cure is curiosity forever. Alas, we had been not so lucky. Whilst we didn’t see something in there to awareness a ferret, he nevertheless believed that he deserved free of charge access. When the home was open, he would explore rapidly after which ignore the guest area. Nevertheless, as soon as the home was closed once again, he returned to his relentless scratching.

Why didn’t we just leave the room doorway open? The area had not been correctly ferret-proofed and we could in no way be certain that a careless guest would not leave some thing laying around that might be dangerous to ferrets.

Our eventual remedy was merely to accept the inevitability that we had been going to need to adjust to having a home that had lot of small scratches at ferret height.

We’ll have more on ferret-proofing the ferret play environment later.

How can I train my ferret to poop in it’s litter box?

He’s in a cage and always poops in the same corner. He’s only 2 months old. Petco told me to take his poop and put it in the litter box but this has not helped. I know for kittens when this happens there is a spray you can use so they don’t go in the same spot. Is there one for ferrets? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Ferret/litterbox training? Please help.?

Hello, I have two ferret, and I adopted them already train and all, including litterbox trained.
Recently, we ran into a problem, they seem to want to go potty right next to the litterbox, rather than in it like they used to..
Its getting ridiculous now.

How can I teach them to go potty inside the litterbox rather than beside it?

[Yes, the litterbox is big enough && is always clean]

ferret potty training question?

Alright, my husband and I have had our ferret for about a week now. I know thats not a ton of time, but we are already at a loss. Our ferret seems to definitely keep pooping to the corners, and is progressing along nicely with litter training, but she pees EVERYWHERE. All over her bedding, in her food, just everywhere. We clean out her cage and an hour later its like we never even cleaned it. The smell gets pretty bad, we’re going through soft blankets like crazy, its a losing battle to keep her cage clean and liveable. any suggestions?
She has been fixed & de-scented, also has had her shots.
